Osteopathic Treatment - What to Expect
On your first visit ..... you will be asked about your presenting complaint and how you think it started, as well as information regarding your past medical history. It would be helpful if you could bring along details of any medication you take regularly.
At your first appointment you will be asked to read and sign a patient information form. It would be helpful if you could come a few minutes early to do this. The information form will be emailed or posted to you after booking your initial appointment (time permitting) and can be downloaded here :
New Patient Information Form (.pdf document)
All information is treated as confidential.
You will be asked to.... undress to your underwear so you can be examined (therefore please wear appropriate underwear - and feel free to bring along a partner or friend). The osteopath will examine your standing posture and take you through some gentle movements and special tests to determine the cause of your symptoms.
Your diagnosis and treatment plan will be fully explained. Please feel free to ask any questions that you have.
Every patient is different and treatment will vary accordingly. However treatment will often involve specific massage of soft tissues, (e.g. muscles, tendons & ligaments) gentle mobilisation of joints and high velocity thrust techniques to improve movement and promote healing. Gentle cranial osteopathic techniques or medical acupuncture may also be used.
Advice on exercise, posture, diet, hydrotherapy (e.g. ice-packs) and the modification of activities may be given in order to increase the effectiveness of treatment and to prevent recurrence of the problem
